Portland Music Month Kick-Off Show! ft.: J. Graves, Bridal Veil, Sit Pretty – 21+

This venue is a proud partner of Portland Music Month. A portion of your ticket price will be donated to the Echo Fund to support local music creators. Find out more here.J. Graves J. Graves is setting out to pioneer something different, with bandleader Jessa Graves squeezing together a tightly packed ball of anger, grief, and acceptance in her latest album Fortress of Fun – an outpouring of wild fury and plaintive sadness with a dark, angular sound. Big new ideas abound, not just musically, but conceptually, too. COVID’s onset in March 2020 forced musicians worldwide to adapt creatively to the impending digital-only era, so it’s rare to see true innovation in an otherwise saturated market, but J. Graves have come up with a captivating idea: a “choose your own adventure” album. Wanting to do something with a little more depth that would engage audiences creatively while welcoming listeners into their experience, the idea was borne from finding a choose-your-own-adventure book in a sci-fi themed studio during the recording process of previous album Deathbed. Early 2020 was tough for the band; like many artists, their built-up momentum was quickly shuttered by COVID’s insurgence. So, in mid-2020, the band went on a getaway to the coast, and the house they were staying in – lit up at night next to the dark ocean – became known as their “fortress of fun,” a title that seems immediately at odds with the album’s often-dark undertones, but one that nonetheless suits Graves’s fight to stay in the light. In that sense, the album exists in two states: the first a mournful and mysterious effort that parses waves of difficult emotions; the second a lush, eclectic undertaking that puts listeners and viewers at the forefront of the band’s collective imagination. Each song from the album comes with a video, through which viewer/listeners can make choices that will lead to further interactive videos. Though the songs are, thematically and contextually, fully distinct from their choose-your-own-adventure video counterparts, the emotion remains raw and real, and J. Graves, with the help of mixer/producer Sylvia Massy, has fine-tuned their sound like never before into something simultaneously painful and buoyant. J. Graves is Aaron MacDonald (drums), Kelly Clifton (bass), and Jessa Graves (guitar, vocals).Bridal Veil Bridal Veil is an American four-piece band from Portland, Oregon inspired by the emotional pangs of the 90’s — the last era to know what life was like without a cell phone in every hand.
Led by guitarist/soprano/flutist Emily Overstreet, the band weaves between ethereal dreampop similar to Cocteau Twins and heavy walls of noise akin to My Bloody Valentine. She is joined by guitarist and producer Jordan Richter, bassist Aaron Krause and Raymond Anthony Hughes on drums.
Together they perform a memorable live set that delivers vulnerable songwriting paired with well-placed force. Their debut EP, Morpho, was released on November 8, 2019. Sit PrettySit Pretty’s work draws inspiration from the electric, rhythmic, atmospheric sounds of the 80s and post-rock, pop influences from the 90’s. All four members cut their teeth on the Pacific Northwest music scene in various projects for over a decade. The band has distilled their various influences into a blend of noisy sonic textures, tight beats and gentle melodies that makes them happy. They hope it makes you happy too.

Portland Music Month: Ghost Feet, Twingle, Darkswoon – 21+

This venue is a proud partner of Portland Music Month. A portion of your ticket price will be donated to the Echo Fund to support local music creators. Find out more here.Ghost Feet Tying together threads across multiple genres, Ghost Feet weaves themselves into a unique cloth cut from dark wave, psych rock, and trip hop inspirations—creating a distinctively textured shoegaze sound that wraps the listener in its sonic fabric, first tucking you in and then tearing you back out.  Ghost Feet’s collaborative writing style is rooted in its first life as duo Rachel Dubuc and Nuri Erdal, guitarists and audio engineers who wrote both their initial release Wires and Cords (EP, Dropping Gems, 2011)  and their first full-length album Together Alone (Dropping Gems, 2015) remotely—trading Ableton tracks back and forth while living in Olympia, WA and Portland, OR.   After taking a break to focus on individual projects, they revived the band in 2019—adding new complexity in this incarnation with Jessie Branch, whose dynamic vocals add an emotional depth that pulls each song into sharper focus.  This layering of individual writing into a final cohesive piece lets the three leave their own signature at each level, stacking those elements into a sound larger than the sum of its parts. Their rhythmic waves draw you out to sea and then wash over you in a tsunami of lyrical impact, as Branch’s graceful vocals flutter past your ears, packing an unexpected weight on arrival.  It also allows the band to continue to write while living in both cities. Now performing as a five-piece with the addition of bassist Ryan Scott, and Benjamin Tyler on drums—Ghost Feet has put out two singles in this latest incarnation, with a third to be released on the upcoming PDX Pop Now! 2023 compilation.Twingle “Twingle, an art rock ensemble that includes songwriter Anna Sabatino (vocals, guitar, piano), Alex Radakovich (drums), Eric Sabatino (bass), Jessica Sylvia (backup vocals, percussion) and Nathan Weber (guitar, piano, synth and backup vocals), enjoys surprising listeners with their unique sound, which blends the unexpected with the familiar. “The line between traditional and untraditional is where I like to live, experiment and push in my songwriting,” Anna Sabatino says. Currently, the band is looking forward to releasing their debut album, Future Caviar.”- Willamette Week, Best New Bands 2023 Darkswoon Darkswoon is a Portland-based trio that has carved out a unique blend of styles. Recently described as one of the strongest darkwave artists in Portland (Robert Ham, Willamette Week), their music isn’t boxed into one genre, drawing from elemental post-punk roots, atmospheric guitars that croon along with ethereal vocals bordering on dream pop and shoegaze. Layers of beats, vintage synth sounds, and melodically driven bass add to the original style, while paying homage to old-school goth and electronic basics. The emotionally charged, potent sound of Darkswoon was founded by composer Jana Cushman (vocals, guitar) in 2014 as a solo project, and later completed with the addition of Rachel Ellis (beats, synths) and Norah Lynn (bass) in 2017. Their sophomore release, ‘Bloom Decay’ (2022, Icy Cold Records), represents an evolution of Darkswoon’s sound, emerging after the challenges of a global pandemic with a body of work that has been praised by some as one of the best albums of 2022 (Stereo Embers’, Last Rites’).

Portland Music Month: Chipped Nail Polish, Jakki & the Pink Smudge, Katy & the Null Sets – 21+

This event was rescheduled from Sunday Jan 14th due to inclement weather, over to this new date of January 28th. All tickets purchased for the original date will be honored at this new one. This venue is a proud partner of Portland Music Month. A portion of your ticket price will be donated to the Echo Fund to support local music creators. Find out more here.Chipped Nail Polish Chipped Nail Polish started with an electric ukulele and a bad manicure. Jill Sullivan, the mastermind behind it all, began the project several years ago while in college at the University of Oregon. She immersed herself fully into the DIY music scene there and emerged with an EP, titled “B,” as well as a community of like minded musicians.  Now, based in Portland, Chipped Nail Polish consists of a full band – an evolving amalgamation of friends Sullivan met in the Oregon music scene. The ethos of the band is built on community and friendship, with live shows involving audience participation amid silly jokes and tender moments.  The sound of Chipped Nail Polish is a unique blend of surf punk influence from Sullivan’s teen years combined with the bedroom indie pop band influences of her adult years. The songs’ coming-of-age lyrics navigate relationships, personal growth and impulse haircuts.  Chipped Nail Polish released their second EP, “Bottom Feeder,” on January 27th 2023. Jakki & the Pink Smudge Jakki and the Pink Smudge, lovingly referred to as “Smudge,” gets its charming name from the inevitable smudging of Jakki’s lipstick while performing. The band’s multifacetedness has cultivated a strong presence in the Portland, Los Angeles, and Houston music scenes, playing alongside artists such as Mavi, The Aquadolls, and Never Ending Fall. With every smear, Jakki and The Pink Smudge continues to complement a wide range of musicians while bringing their own distinctive, moving, and peachy sound.   Smudge has always been known for its ever-evolving backup band for live performances. These ensembles have been comprised of musicians hand-picked from various bands within the local music scene of each show’s location. The practice of adapting their set with each unique combination of artists has allowed their music to evolve constantly, fostering a spirit of creativity and playfulness. However, for the first time in Smudge history, we now have a permanent backing band containing Calleb Ballard (guitar), Oliver Lester (bass), and Charlie Oakes (drums). The band is profoundly grateful for the years of exploration and excited to embark on this next season of Smudge. Katy & the Null Sets Katy & the Null Sets is the long-time “solo project” of Katy Ohsiek, vocalist and songwriter of Portland disco group Foamboy. The project has taken many forms since its inception in 2015. Katy & the Null Sets has been a solo singer-songwriter act, a collection of iPhone voice memos, elaborate synth pop albums, a ukulele-drummer 2 piece, and now a new-wave-inspired 4-piece band of jazz musicians. The unifying element over the years has been Katy’s melodies, lyricism, and unique song forms, which borrow from bossa nova, neo-soul, mid-2000’s indie rock, and modern americana. Currently, Katy & the Null Sets is a full band with regular shows in the Portland area and a new album in the works.

Portland Music Month: Jonny’s Day Out, Pool Boys, Nate Wey & The Soft Colors – 21+

This venue is a proud partner of Portland Music Month. A portion of your ticket price will be donated to the Echo Fund to support local music creators. Find out more here.Jonny’s Day Out “Jonny’s Day Out came out of a collaboration between singer-guitarist Avery Haines and multi-instrumentalist Eli Goldberg, who records ambient music at Ann Annie. The two made the album The House on the Hill together in 2021 and embarked on a small co-headlining tour. After adding drummer Will Dowden, bassist Blu Midyett, and trumpet and keyboard player Jude Abare, the duo leaned into a sound that combined Haines’ folk rock and Goldberg’s soundscapes. While some of their songs (like “I Missed the Bus, Man”) descend from the sound of The House on the Hill, others (like “Intro Credits”) are ambient reveries that will appeal to anyone who knows the name Kranky Records.Their debut EP, Please excuse our mess, was recorded by Graham Jonson, the onetime lo-fi hip-hop beatmaker who’s recently blossomed into something of a pop auteur under the name quickly, quickly.”- Willamette Week, Best New Bands 2023Pool Boys A reductionist view of Pool Boys’ music could claim four words: Loud guitars; pretty harmonies. Songwriters Emma Browne and Caroline Jackson weave their varied pedigrees together to form a unique sound in Portland music. Pool Boys thrive in dualities – they live in a space where soft and sensitive give way to grit and ire. Browne’s melodic guitar hooks and oft-spacey, oft-grungy textures are thoroughly supported by Jackson’s weaving bass lines and all four member’s strong voices. The four-piece feels equally at home with intricate art-pop outfits or with DIY punk bands. With additional harmonies, guitar, and drums from Annie Dillon and Monica Metzler, their live performances – always decked in all shades of blue – are a sight to behold.Pool Boys has been named one of Willamette Week’s Best New Bands, was featured as the opening track of PDX Pop Now’s local compilation, shared stages with Jerry Paper, Tonstartssbandht, Vinyl Williams, and Diane Coffee, and were featured on KOIN 6 AM Extra News Show. Pool Boys is currently in production for their first full-length album with producer Cam Spies of Night Heron and Radiation City.  Nate Wey & The Soft ColorsStill Adventures, out on Little Cloud Records, captures the daze and confusion that came as the Covid shut-down lifted – with unexpected flashes of country twang that make this collection of songs stand out from Wey’s previous shoegaze albums. Thematically, the album represents the feeling of waking up from a long fog. Influences include David Lynch, Mazzy Star, NIN, and Velvet Underground. A prolific creative, Wey’s recent output includes a self-released solo album recorded during the pandemic lockdown, an ambient piece that plays on a 24 hour loop in a building lobby (The Fair Haired Dumbbell), and a music video in rotation at Hollywood Theater’s PDX Mini-plex (the only airport cinema in the country).    Still Adventures was recorded at Trench Studios with Gregg Williams (co-producer of the Dandy Warhols’ 13 Tales of Urban Bohemia, engineer for Blitzen Trapper). It is the first album under the moniker Nate Wey and The Soft Colors.   Nate Wey and The Soft Colors include Erik Wisloff-Menteer (former Blitzen Trapper), Rhea Morais (The Black Doors, DJ Queen Amygdala), Leah Heuser, and Kyle Cregan (Smile Pile, James Jones and the Chupacabras).

With an uncanny talent for pushing the boundaries of genres, her artistic journey is a uniquely fascinating odyssey. Influenced by iconic voices like Brandi Carlile, Annie Lennox, and Bonnie Raitt, her music is a symphony of soaring vocals, thought-provoking lyrics, and an innovative blend of indie-pop and folk rock. She explains, ‘I want my music to inspire people to overcome challenges, to embrace hope, and to believe in their authentic selves.’ Her stage presence is nothing short of electrifying, imbued with a rare sincerity that’s profoundly endearing. With or without a band, Haley’s shows leave audiences grinning ear to ear and shedding heartfelt tears. Haley’s artistic journey took flight in her early twenties, ignited by her remarkable journey to the top 24 on American Idol Season 11 in 2012. Returning home, she crafted around 200 songs in her parents’ backyard shed over three years, with the most captivating ones finding a home on her debut EP, ‘Through the Blue,’ in 2015. Subsequently, she released her second EP, ‘When You Lit The Sky,’ in 2017, alongside a string of singles, national tours, and formative experiences with her hometown band. In 2019, Haley’s career skyrocketed when, just one day into her inaugural European tour, she was recruited as a bassist and backup vocalist for indie-pop sensation Big Wild. She embraced this opportunity with such fervor that she learned her bass parts while hurtling down the Autobahn. Her time with Big Wild led her to grace renowned festivals such as Lollapalooza, Coachella, Bonnaroo, and perform three sold-out shows at the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Fast forward to 2022, and Haley’s full-length album ‘Goner’ emerged. Written and recorded during the height of the pandemic, the album delves into the perpetual tug-of-war between confidence and self-doubt, fear and trust, and the yearning to be fully present with oneself. It’s a masterful fusion of ’80s-inspired synth-pop and poignant ballads, as noted by American Songwriter. Presidio Born in Berlin and now based in Portland, Oregon, Presidio is an intra-psychedelic rock band led by the dynamic songwriting and vocal partnership of Gabriella De La Cruz and Will Zesiger. Presidio has collaborated and performed with various organizations worldwide, including Sofar Sounds, Sound Mind, Stella Artois, Deloitte, Verizon, and more. Dakota Theim A songwriter with a gift for whimsical melodies, breezy productions, and introspective lyricism, Dakota Theim has been a mainstay on the Portland indie underground for years.  His sound is largely inspired by the golden age of FM radio, laden with sunny harmonies and blissed out guitars.  With his latest releases, he is exploring new sonic territory while musing on relationships, identity, and aging, resulting in some of the most endearing songs of his career.  Dakota’s auteur-like qualities have earned him favorable comparisons to artists like Tame Impala and Mac DeMarco.  He writes and produces all of his own material from his Portland home studio, often times being joined by live band members Ben Bilotti, Alex Werner, Jack Stringer, and Joseph Freeman to round out his recordings.  Together, the band has hosted several sold-out shows in their hometown, and toured extensively across the Pacific Northwest.  While his productions are often eccentric and whimsical, Dakota’s devotion to the craft of songwriting is what sets him apart.  His songs are meticulously composed, full of left turns and moments of unexpected beauty.  With a steady stream of new content expected for this year and beyond, Dakota finds himself on the verge of breaking out of his local scene and reaching a national audience.
