Soul Conversation: Living History in Albina – Free Early Event presented by Albina Music Trust – 21+

The streets of Albina reveal little trace of the thriving Black community that once occupied that part of Portland. Much of what we can discover today rests in the collective memory of the elders who lived it. SOUL CONVERSATION is a gathering of Albina’s elder musicians, activating memory through storytelling. The event features Norman Sylvester, Ural Thomas, Paul Knauls, J.W. Friday, Mel Brown and Calvin Walker. Archival photography showcasing Abina’s historic music culture will be presented in conjunction with the conversation. In addition, kiosks displaying Albina Music Trust’s digital archive will be live throughout the venue. Arrive early and learn more about this important preservation effort, experience the user interface, and share feedback in advance of the archive’s 2024 public release. Albina Music Trust is preserving North Portland’s music culture with programming that documents the Black community’s oral history, archival media, and special events. In collaboration with Albina musicians, founders Bobby Smith and Calvin Walker have brought to light a definitive catalog of historic regional music and the memories of its creators. This preservation initiative is a program of the World Arts Foundation, serving Oregonians at the intersection of arts and education since 1976.
PORTLAND FRUIT TREE PROJECT BENEFIT SHOW ft. Ruune, Femme Cell, Culture Cat, Second Half Walters – 21+

Portland Fruit Tree Project is a grassroots 501(c)(3) non-profit gleaning organization that provides a community-based solution to a critical and growing need in Portland and beyond: access to healthy food and the benefits provided by trees including cleaner air, shade, and food. By empowering neighbors to share in the harvest and care of urban fruit trees, they are preventing waste, building community knowledge and resources, and creating sustainable ways to obtain healthy, locally-grown food. Ruune is a multidisciplinary performance artist who builds worlds and connections via ritual tools. Employing glitch sounds and acoustics, Ruune draws from a wide variety of genres ranging from pop to experimental and changes the tone of an environment from set to set. With music releases on both Dollhouse Lighting, Fake Four INC, and over a decade of touring experience they seek to craft wonderment and texture in the air. The Second Half Walters are an indie punk band from Portland, OR. They released their debut EP, Prescience, in September of 2023 featuring energetic songs, with big dynamic shifts and poppy melodies, backed up with grit and speed. Fyield: live performance + Invisible Landscapes short film screening – w/ Moss Wand, Saapato, Patricia Wolf (DJ set) – 21+

On their debut album, Future Landscapes, the Czech-Icelandic collaboration fyield explores the locations used to satiate the needs of our society in terms of power consumption and nourishment, or places impacted by the exigencies of industrial society. Altogether, the artists’ adventurous journey shows us how solutions to existing problems bring new, often unsuspected and complicated issues. By focusing on the sound that emanates from technological, power-generating and other entities, they testify to our existence beyond the visible. Their work portrays unique entities that don’t usually attract our attention – even though our civilisation depends on them. They are not people, mythical figures or animals, but technological devices and ecosystems that open up questions about our climate future. The album was preceded by a sonic expedition. A group of musicians, accompanied by leading European field recordists, Sara Pinheiro from Portugal and Magnús Bergsson from Iceland, visited eight locations in the Czech Republic and Iceland. With the help of special instruments such as hydrophones, geophones, ambeo or electromagnetic sensors, they listened to the manifestations of infrastructures that the human ear alone cannot hear. fyield’s compositions bring us close to, or inside, the organs of geothermal, hydroelectric or coal-fired power plants, a CO2 repository, an aquaponic farm, a lagoon created by melting glaciers, and an oil well. The Czech Republic and Iceland represent countries with contrasting approaches to CO2 production. The Czech fossil-fuel-impacted landscape is juxtaposed with the seemingly environmentally sensitive Iceland, where the technology it employs poses a number of problems of a completely different type. fyield warns us that it is futile to hope for a single save-all solution to the climate crisis. fyield brings together leading figures of the Czech and Icelandic independent music scene. Czech musicians Václav Havelka and Kryštof Krฬícฬek from the band Please The Trees are joined by Iceland’s Pan Thorarensen, a member of the ambient trio Stereo Hypnosis and founder of the international experimental music festival Extreme Chill, which has been held in Reykjavik since 2010. Director Ivo Bystลiฤan brings from this expedition the short film Invisible Landscapes, which will be screened this evening. with support from Portland’s own Moss Wand, a DJ set from Patricia Wolf, and a special set from New York based field recordist Saapato.
Liv.e, Stas THEE Boss, Israel Autumns, Tha Day – All Ages – presented by Sean Healy

Liv.e, pronounced “Liv” (born Hailee Olivia Williams in Dallas, Texas) is an American singer-songwriter, rapper and producer who mixes facets of R&B, jazz, soul, and hip hop to create a sound that is wholly her own. Coupling her hypnotic voice and unique writing over dusty loops and sun soaked production, Liv.e makes songs that are both eclectic and timeless without sounding dated. While it’s difficult to label Liv.e’s music under one genre or scene, it is born out of production based on samples pulled from vinyl in Dallas record shops, southern rap, and her upbringing in Dallas with local DIY label Dolfin Records. She also raps under the alias Jade Fox, forming a supergroup with fellow Dolfin labelmate Lord Byron and Pink Siifu under the name Kryptonyte. Liv.e started to garner attention with her 2017 project FRANK and 2018’s Hoopdreams, which led to her supporting Earl Sweatshirt on the 2019 Fire It Up Tour alongside BbyMutha, MIKE and Na-Kel Smith; as well as featuring on “MTOMB” from Earl’s EP Feet of Clay. On July 30, 2020, she released her debut album Couldn’t Wait to Tell You… to critical acclaim, featuring guest appearances from C.S. Armstrong, Lord Byron and Akeema Zane. Exactly a year later on the album’s first anniversary, she would follow this up with CWTTY+, a deluxe companion to the album with 6 brand new tracks.
