Lyn Lapid – to love in the 21st century tour – ALL AGES – w/ Ezra S-I

A classically trained musician, unpredictable vocal dynamo, and fearless genre-breaker, Lyn Lapid asserts herself as an individual through and through. At 20-years-old, the singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist has unassumingly emerged as an unapologetic and undeniable voice for her generation. In 2018, Lyn posted a ukulele and vocal cover of “Best Part” by Daniel Caesar and H.E.R. on YouTube. She went on to deliver D.I.Y. YouTube renditions of everyone from Ariana Grande and Sabrina Claudio to Edith Piaf and Sarah McLachlan, amassing 60 million-plus views and counting on her channel. In late 2019, Lyn launched her TikTok page, building an audience of 5 million followers and over 1 billion views at a rapid pace. Meanwhile, a snippet of her first original, “Producer Man,” exploded. Produced by Dan Nigro [Olivia Rodrigo, Conan Gray, Carly Rae Jepsen, Lewis Capaldi, Sky Ferreira, Empress Of], the song gathered over 70 million views and 8 million likes and emerged as “the most-viewed unreleased demo on a TikTok video in 2020.” Following “Producer Man”’s breakout success, Lyn debuted a string of viral releases in 2021, including “Itsy Bitsy,” “Infinite,” and “In My Mind.” Not to mention, she received co-signs from Billie Eilish, BTS’ Jungkook, and Sabrina Carpenter, amassed over 550 million global streams to date, and has been praised by the likes of Rolling Stone, Billboard, Buzzfeed, E! Online, Refinery29, HYPEBAE, Idolator, Ones To Watch, and more. Her rising star continues in 2023 as she kicks off a new era with her first nationwide headline tour beginning May 31 and her forthcoming EP “to love in the 21st century”, set to release June 23.Stephanie Poetri is sick today and will be unable to open up for Lyn Lapid tonight. poptropicaslutz!: Truth Is In The Glitter Tour – w/ TX2, aldrch – presented by Mammoth NW – All Ages

“If it hadn’t been for the pandemic, I would have never had the guts to say no to Cornell.” By the end of 2019, Christian Cicilia was living the typical life of a Long Island-based, college-bound high school senior. His hometown friend and future poptropicaslutz! bandmate Nick Crawford was one semester into his first semester of community college with plans to transfer to Parsons. But as March 2020 rolled around and a global pandemic upset their respective plans, Crawford and Cicilia decided to take advantage of the moment and form poptropicaslutz! — a genre-surfing hyperpunk project brimming with nonstop hooks and pop-fueled energy. Now 20 and 21, Cicilia and Crawford are genuinely living out their dream: They’re newly signed to punk/alternative incubator Epitaph Records and actively working on the much-anticipated follow-up to their 2022 just in case the world ends DELUXE EP, which is produced in part by the band’s close collaborator Aldrch (Midwxst, Aldn, Contradash) and mixed by Brian Moncarz (Alice Cooper, Circa Survive) and Matt Mallpass (Blink 182, Trippie Redd). As songwriters, Cicilia and Crawford both draw considerable inspiration from a variety of genres and decades, imbuing their glitched-out, auto-tuned melodies with elements of Fall Out Boy, Hellogoodbye, Juice WRLD, Kelly Clarkson, the Black Eyed Peas, and ‘10s SoundCloud rap. The last couple of pandemic years provided ample material for poptropicaslutz! to pour into their debut, just in case the world ends. “I feel like if COVID didn’t happen, I would never have wanted that to be the name of our debut EP,” laughs Crawford. “But when things started getting bad, it was like one new, terrible thing every few days. Whether it was COVID or the BLM riots. I was like, ‘wow, the world’s really ended. It’s the end of the world.’ EP opener “WW3” (featuring RIZ LA VIE & GRANDMA) captures this apocalyptic feeling; over banging percussion and crunchy guitars, the two trade tongue-in-cheek lyrics about IRL catastrophes seen through a virtual lens (“One day I’ll die, and you’ll just think I’m offline”).  Despite the generation-defining global events that shaped them, poptropicaslutz! also pour classic young-adult angst into their songwriting. The glitch-pop/dance-punk single “TEEN POP SENSATION,” for example, goes hard with live-for-now energy. Layering auto-tuned vocals reminiscent of Panic! At The Disco, the band pushes listeners to live for the present moment, even in the face of naysayers and outside chaos: “Then you dance, dance, hoping it’ll mask the pain/ Baby, fuck it, do a handstand, go insane/ Like there’s nobody watching/ They’re all just critics anyway, so act out of pocket.” It’s vital advice for anyone — regardless of age. If poptropicaslutz! themselves hadn’t decided to say “fuck it” and form a band, none of the success they’ve seen — between the sold-out shows, Spotify New Music Friday placements, and glowing write-ups in Ones To Watch — would be happening. But, in addition to having uncanny ears for melody, Cicilia and Crawford are strategic and focused on making the most of this moment. “If I’d gone to Cornell, I probably wouldn’t be making music,” Cicilia says. “I was always the goody two shoes smart kid. I didn’t want to let anyone down. But the pandemic made me turn around and say: ‘Whatever. This is a once-in-a-lifetime thing.”

Puppeteers for Fears Present: Cthulhu the Musical! – 21+

Puppeteers for Fears presents, Cthulhu: The Musical! This show is entirely sold out. Thank you Portland! A rock’n’roll retelling of the horror classic “The Call of Cthulhu,” performed entirely with puppets.  Runtime: two hours+ with one intermission. Rated R for language and themes. Includes flashing lights. Featuring live music from The Elephant. Detective LaGrasse is searching for a murderer. Francine Thurston’s uncle vanished. The only clue to both mysteries is a bizarre statue worshiped by a nightmarish cult. And it’s leading both of them out to sea, toward a mysterious island from their nightmares—and toward insanity. But, you know, with singing puppets. Puppeteers for Fears, Oregon’s premier rock’n’roll puppet troupe, presents an original show that, in a sensible universe, would be impossible: a feature-length musical comedy adaptation of one of the least musical or comedic stories ever: H.P. Lovecraft’s cosmic horror classic, The Call of Cthulhu—performed entirely with puppets, and a live band. See noir detectives, dancing tentacles, anarchist pirates, broken-hearted academics, sassy monsters, and more, as they sing and dance their way to love, madness, and possibly the end of the world. “You haven’t truly experienced Lovecraft’s madness until you’ve experienced it in its truest form: As a puppet musical.” —The Portland Mercury “The most blasphemous ritual of singing and dancing since Chicago.” —SyFy Wire “I don’t even like puppets. But that was some next-level puppet shit.” —Susan, audience member

Quadeca & Quickly Quickly – ALL AGES

Ben Lasky adopted the moniker Quadeca during preschool recess, in the necessity to name a superhuman persona. At ten years old, Quadeca took on the heroic task that’d become the central focus of his multi-hyphenate creative career–writing and producing his own expressive style of music. He would go on to attract a cult-like following, where fans are prone to analyze his work and discuss it communally. Quadeca’s first forays into concept albums, Voice Memos and From Me To You, both made impressive debuts across streaming platforms for an independent musician. Lasky responded by shifting the focus of Quadeca towards achieving greatness in his LP’s craftsmanship, and away from the virality of his premier platform, YouTube, where his subscribership was nearing two million.  The release of the spectral and impressionistic “I Didn’t Mean To Haunt You” album signified a watershed moment for Lasky. The credits tout contributions from Danny Brown and others, mastering at Abbey Road, but simultaneously stands as the biggest statement-piece of his creative independence: A fully self-produced opus with an accompanying film that has landed him newfound levels of acclaim from music fans and critics alike.. The reception stirred widespread internet discourse about the validity of multi-media creators evolving in the internet age, which culminated towards a short series of analytical videos from critic Anthony Fantano who named the album’s lead single “Born Yesterday” as the 7th best song of 2022. Now, Quadeca’s vision is focused straight ahead, onto the next opus that stands tall outside of its zeitgeist context. The new quickly, quickly EP finds Portland, Oregon’s Graham Jonson back in his home studio, engrossed in ‘60s psychedelic soul music, imagining some bygone era where it was all about the drum sounds and tape decay. He calls it Easy Listening; the songs are short and inviting, modest yet loaded with ideas. Each started with the drum part, a loose grid for Jonson to paint his idiosyncratic psych-pop across, again playing nearly every instrument. The set follows his 2021 LP, The Long And The Short of It, the 22-year-old musician’s debut on Ghostly International, a coming-of-age jump from the chill beats-oriented corners of the internet to a full-fledged songwriting project with hi-fi sophistication. The moment culminated with Pitchfork’s Rising profile, “quickly, quickly’s Technicolor Pop Bursts Beyond the Algorithm,” and kickstarted the formation of his 6-piece live band for a run of exploratory shows along the west coast. But as the tangible demands for his music pulled him outward and some growing pains in his personal life ensued, Jonson focused his energy back inside; to the comforts of home recording, filling his space with more gear and sessions with friends. Maybe a bit of a droll title for a hard time, Easy Listening briefly pauses for air, offering five of his breeziest basement jams for public enjoyment.

Sam Blasucci (of Mapache) w/ Dan Horne Band – 21+

Sam Blasucci is best known as one half of Mapache, a Southern California roots-rock duo just as instantly recognizable for their elegant, intertwined guitar parts as they are for their devoted, Nudie-Suit wearing fanbase. But when Blasucci was writing the songs that would become his debut solo record, Off My Stars, he found himself less focused on the guitar and more gravitated toward a different instrument: piano.  The mother of Clay Finch, his Mapache bandmate, was getting rid of one, and so Blasucci took the piano, carefully transporting it to his home in Ojai, California, with the help of a few strong friends, including Farmer Dave Scher of Beachwood Sparks (and a Mapache collaborator). “Farmer Dave wasn’t even wearing shoes,” Blasucci remembers, laughing. Once the piano was safely in there, he became deeply attached, playing on it multiple hours a day: “It’s changed the way I think about music, having all the keys laid out in front of me,” he explains. “Having that sort of changed everything.” Also inspired by his recent time riding out the pandemic in New Orleans, where the clubs may have closed but the music never stopped, Blasucci used that piano to start writing one of the most inspired batches of songs of his career thus far. New gems like “Turn Yourself Around” and “Sha La La” were developing with a Southern swing and classic songbook sparkle, and when assessing the growing stack of music he was working on, Blasucci realized that there was something about these tunes that wasn’t quite suited for a Mapache record.  Infused with an honest, personal perspective about settling into adult life—about developing as a person and a partner and a family member—these songs were straight from the heart, a clear window, recently Windexed, into the life of one of the most talented members of the L.A.-area underground rock scene. Using just as much inspiration from the music of Ronnie Wood and Sade as the films of Ingmar Bergman and the writing of Brian Doyle, Blasucci started to see a vision of songs that are all “fully autobiographical.” Blasucci reached out to songwriter and producer Johnny Payne, and the two decamped to Dan Horne’s Lone Palm Studio, the home/studio where Mapache has in the past both recorded and abided in. Blasucci’s direction to Payne—acting as producer and as multi-instrumentalist, performing on everything from shaker to “guitar pancake”—was simple: no pretense, no affect, no Mr. Cool. On “Proud of You Dad,” Blasucci dug into his archives for a song that’s he had for some time, originally having written and recorded it just for his father, David Blasucci, a musician who was at one time a touring member in the band Toto, and who has performed and acted in Christopher Guest movies like A Mighty Wind. “If I ever told you this while we were in the same room / I know you would cover your ears and run,” Sam sings over a rustic, campfire acoustic progression.  But Sam is his own man now, writing the new chapters of his own life with an aw-shucks tone that belies his prolific workload. Even through the pandemic—and even with the ongoing backlogs at pressing plants—Blasucci has still managed to put out beloved Mapache records in each of the last three years, and he and the band have no plans to slow down anytime soon. “I’m definitely the type of artist that is constantly creating,” Sam says, matter of fact. “And I can’t seem to really stop.”.

Believe You Me 9 Year Anniversary Party! w/ Ash Lauryn (Detroit), Andy Warren & Ginkgo – 21+

Ash Lauryn balances between two worlds, with an old-school house-head foundation and a digital age suaveness, blending her skills as a deejay, writer, curator, and radio host to champion black dance music. Discovering her passion for music in her native Detroit, she was inspired to start deejaying in her current residence Atlanta, taking inspiration from the legendary Kai Alce of NDATL and Vicki Powell. After noticing a lack of representation for Black millennials in electronic music, Ash started her blog Underground and Black, which has since grown into a wide-ranging platform covering her annual Movement Festival party, monthly NTS show, and podcast of the same name. Her passion for music has led her across the globe, from her past residencies in Atlanta, Expressions, and Deep South, to gigs at Nowadays in New York, Panorama Bar Berlin, and Printworks London. She’s played with musicians such as Joe Claussell and Moodymann and at renowned festivals like Afropunk, Dimensions, and Flow Festival Helsinki. Her writing has appeared in The Face Magazine, Mixmag, and Resident Advisor, and she recently served as Guest Editor for Beatport’s online magazine Beatportal. She has also interviewed electronic music legends Robert Hood and Honey Dijon and recently curated a line-up for Boiler Room Festival New York that included the likes of Ron Trent and Analog Soul. Lately, Ash was nominated for DJ of the Year at the Bembe DJ Awards and participated in Off-White’s SS21 “Imaginary TV” platform. She is currently working on music production and recently released her debut solo EP titled Truth, in September 2021. Brickbat Mansion and Holocene present: We Are Parasols (album release show!) w/ Darkswoon & DJ Wednesday- 21+

On Body Horror, We Are Parasols meld new-wave synths, thundering industrial percussion, and a sly sense of humor into an eminently engaging slab of static-drenched noise pop. Breathy, sneer-sung vocals wind through a sonic landscape of cracking static and the hiss of rotting electronics. Rumbling sub-bass and chainsaw leads strut and swagger over a foundation of dark pop melody. The brutally beautiful chaos of Body Horror, the sonic contradictions and extremes, are as deeply expressive as the tales the lyrics tell.   While early releases from the band drew primary from indie-electro, shoegaze, and post-rock, We Are Parasols has no allegiance to genre. While their prior work had been conceptual, the isolation brought about by the pandemic resulted in a looking inward. Leaning into this reinvention, the band chose to stop using anything remotely like shoegaze guitar, seeking to balance the industrial core of the songs with something more inviting and human. Body Horror represent an important evolution in the work of We Are Parasols. Underpinning the deep bass, industrial beats, and pop vocal melodies are deeply personal vignettes that speak to the universal experience of being human.  Bandcamp WebsiteDarkswoon is a Portland-based trio that has carved out a unique blend of genres. Drawing from elemental post-punk roots, their music is imbued with goth-tinged atmospheric guitars and ethereal vocals, bordering on dream pop. Layers of beats, haunting synth, and melodically driven bass add a modern edge, while still paying homage to old-school goth. The emotionally charged and potent sound of Darkswoon was founded by composer Jana Cushman (vocals, guitar) in 2014 as a solo project, and later completed with the addition of Rachel Ellis (beats, synths) and Norah Lynn (bass) in 2017. Their sophomore release, ‘Bloom Decay’ (2022, Icy Cold Records), represents an evolution of Darkswoon’s sound, emerging after the challenges of a global pandemic with a body of work that has been praised by some as one of the best albums of 2022 (Stereo Embers’, Last Rites’). Bandcamp Website Originally based in Los Angeles, DJ Wednesday was a staple in the LA scene for well over a decade. Her radio show Generation Death was touted as the longest-running goth radio show, with 14 years of history. In the clubs, Wednesday’s diverse style was instrumental in the growth of the LA Shoegaze and Post-punk scene through her co-creation of Violaine. Upon relocating to Portland in late 2008 Wednesday started her own ever-evolving concept night, Brickbat Mansion. Musically her DJ style includes a heavy dose of Goth, Ethereal, Shoegaze, Dark 80’s, Dark Wave and Post-Punk.
